All The Kids Are So Stupid

On my daily YouTube search for awesome videos, I stumbled upon another Schmoyoho Auto-tuned the news called "Get Money, Turn Gay -Songify the news 1." Although the name of the song sounds... inappropriate, the content of the it is much interesting and inspiring.

From Vermin Suprime, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and the Republican President Debate, the part which stimulated my neurons the most ( with it's melody and meaning) was the one of Mr. John Stossel, a US consumer reporter, investigative journalist, author and libertarian columnist. He "sang" about a particular group of people who don't "pay attention" to the world, who are too distracted with "cheer leading" and "rock concerts". He said that they can't make good choices to elect a suitable President, because they are dumb. He was referring about us, teenagers, "kids" old enough to vote.

His choice of words were poor while giving his point of view in the subject, this made me disagree with him instantily, but after thinking through the idea behind the statement, it gave me a funny feeling to my stomach. Maybe I'm wrong, but most teenagers at Fremd have chosen a party to follow and know what is going on with the country's politics and economy (We have to take Survey, for crying out loud! How can we ignore what is going on if we are in that class!) We know what we want, and we can make our own decisions for the future of the country and of all. But yet again, in other parts of the country, eighteen-year-olds may not have the education or information that we have. They may not be aware of what is going inside the country at this time, or what is happening in other nations that influence the US as well.

Are we educated enough to make good decisions? Should we wait until our early twenties, when our brains are fully developed, and when we have more understanding of what is going on in the US to begin voting? Or are we, at this moment and age, mentally prepared and wise enough to make mature decisions for ourselves and the rest of the country?

Stossel clearly thinks that we should grow up a more until our first vote, but the correct answer doesn't belong to him, or me.

....What do you think?

  1. well, maybe our brains aren't fully developed, and many kids will vote for one candidate over another because of peer pressure, but I believe that the voting age was reduced to 18 because teens can serve in the military. If they can serve in the military, they should be able to choose their commander in chief. So the voting age is fair, and I don't think the limit should be raised to 21.

    1. Huh... I never thought about that, I guess that's a legit reason for why we are allowed to vote. Thanks! :D My lesson of the day has been taught.

  3. The drinking age should be dropped down too. Not that I drink, it just makes sense. Sorry tangent, I read 21 and thought booze.

I agree with most of your post and love that you hot the idea from schmoyoho!! Part I agree with: teenagers are educated and we can make good decisions. Part I don't agree with: we aren't all smart, admittedly some teenagers are really super duper dumb, the kind of dumb that should not be possible.

Alas, we have the right to vote when we're 18, which again makes sense because of what Meghan said, commander and chief, military. All of that.

    Amurica...
